An RF test board must contribute less uncertainty than the device or channel being evaluated. Material selection therefore serves fixture stability, loss, calibration quality and repeatability, not simply a low-loss transmission line in isolation.

Define the measurement reference planes

Decide where the instrument calibration ends and which launches, lines and transitions remain in the result. A fixture intended for de-embedding needs a supported method and test structures that represent the actual path. Connector repeatability, mounting and soldering can dominate uncertainty even when the laminate has well-controlled properties. Record the usable band of the complete fixture rather than assuming the connector rating defines it.

Candidate constructions to investigate

RO4350B offers a thermoset RF route for fixtures; RT/duroid 5880 is a low-Dk PTFE candidate where its geometry and handling fit. RO1200 deserves investigation for suitable high-speed channel structures. These are starting points, not claims that every grade supports a given measurement bandwidth or accuracy.

Example: extracting a device's small loss

If the device loss is small compared with the fixture loss, an uncertain fixture correction can overwhelm the result. Build appropriate reference structures and check repeatability after reconnection. Compare multiple line lengths or other structures required by the selected extraction method. Inspect return loss and residual errors before interpreting a tiny change as an improvement in the device. Keep a known reference board to detect changes in the measurement setup.

Make mechanical use part of validation

Repeated connection, clamping and temperature changes can affect a fixture. Support the board near connectors, define the mounting procedure and inspect wear points. Include the actual finish and conductor geometry on calibration or reference structures. The impedance guide helps define the uniform line, while the qualification guide links calibration, conditioning and raw data to the report. Preserve the model and as-built dimensions so a replacement fixture can be correlated to the original rather than assumed identical from the laminate name.

Report measurement uncertainty or repeatability alongside small differences between samples. A comparison that lacks this context can rank two materials even when the apparent gap is smaller than the fixture’s reconnection variation.

Choose and validate a complete fixture whose uncertainty and repeatability fit the measurement task.
