RT/duroid 5280LZ is a low-Dk PTFE laminate with woven-glass construction options. Its identity is distinct from RT/duroid 5880LZ, and even within 5280LZ the glass style changes the documented dielectric constant. It is therefore a construction-led selection rather than a single generic low-permittivity material.

Material system

Filled PTFE with woven-glass reinforcement; construction-specific

Dissipation factor0.0028Typical, 10 GHz, 23°C; IPC-TM-650 2.5.5.5; direction is not separately recorded here. Source
Process dielectric constant2.06 (3313 glass); 2.10 (1080 glass)Typical; 10 GHz, 23°C/50% RH, IPC-TM-650 2.5.5.5. Values depend on glass construction. Source

Typical reported values are not a purchase specification. Process Dk, design Dk and values measured at different frequencies are not interchangeable.

Selection and design notes

  • Consider it for antenna or transmission structures where low Dk and a reinforced laminate suit the mechanical layout. First choose the required core thickness and glass style, then use the matching electrical characterization.
  • For a patch antenna, compare the footprint, edge fields and thickness sensitivity with a 5880-based design. Lower Dk can change the geometry substantially without automatically improving the complete antenna bandwidth.

Thickness and copper options

Thickness selection and glass style must be read together from the product table and Design Dk plots.

The characterization includes 18 µm copper constructions; verify the exact foil weight and type when ordering.

Fabrication considerations

  • The fabricator should qualify the reinforced-PTFE drill and hole preparation process for the selected construction. Preserve glass-style information in the stackup so that a procurement substitution cannot silently change the dielectric model.

Application fit

  • Low-Dk antenna layers
  • Microwave feeds
  • Reinforced PTFE structures

Limits and substitution checks

  • The table gives 2.06 for 3313 glass and 2.10 for 1080 glass; the Design Dk plots also depend on thickness. A single automatic Dk is withheld. The official selector does not supply a thermal-conductivity value, so no thermal estimate is invented for this record.
